Qualitative Versus Quantitative

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On July - 26 - 2007

By: Jimmy Smith

The common trend in the industry is to tell people to “get strong”. That’s 100% true but becomes a problem since many “smart” internet people always seem to miss the point. Getting strong is great but we’ve become too quantitative. We focus too much on numbers, our sets, reps and weight.

Video Games, Meet My Other Good Friend, Exercise: Part II

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On July - 25 - 2007

By: Kevin Larrabee

As I talked about in Part I, I am a “hardcore gamer.” I am counting the days until Halo 3 comes out (9 weeks from yesterday). As a gamer I have become accustom to people stating that we are a bunch of lazy bastards living in our mothers basements, eating Cheeto’s and drinking Mountain Dew. For a certain group that holds true, but video games and physical activity seem to becoming friends instead of foes. Dance Dance Revolution, Wii Sports, and other games are getting people together, and getting them to move as well.

The Plyometric Myth

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On July - 20 - 2007

By: Jimmy Smith

When I receive emails from potential clients who are either seeking performance or body composition gains I ask them to detail their current training for me. One of the common denominators that limits their gains is the lack of training variations. Most people are going to train one of two ways

One Piece of Advice

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On July - 17 - 2007

By: Tony Gentilcore, CSCS, CPT

If I could give anyone one piece of advice on what I feel would improve their overall progress in the gym it would be to improve their training environment. It’s that simple. It has nothing to do with following some advanced training program that has you following some complex Russian periodized scheme. Nor has it anything to do with eating 1.458643 grams of protein per kg of lean body mass compared to 1.654758 grams per kg (although BigGunz22 over at www.trainingminutia.com might say otherwise).

Creatine is for Women Too!

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On July - 16 - 2007

By: Jen Heath

As a trainer, I always recommend that my clients take creatine, unless they are completely opposed to it. There is no reason why any beginner or experienced lifter should not experience the benefits creatine has to offer. Creatine will help make any woman stronger. Strength is directly related to an increase in muscle size and volume. More muscle makes it easier to burn fat. The more muscle you have, the more you can eat (yay!) and the more you can eat, the more you can grow.
