HIIT Basics

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On August - 31 - 2007

HIIT (High intensity interval training) is nothing new. In fact, athletes have been doing this type of training for years. It has caught on lately with the fat loss community and for good reason. HIIT works and it works well. What is the down side? It is very difficult and because of that, not many people stick with it. For a detailed explanation of what HIIT is and why is works, check out a blog article I wrote about it here.

Fasted State Exercise/Training

Not too long ago I had a client who was adamant that fasted state exercise was the best way to shed fat and get lean. All of this despite the fact that he was 40 lbs overweight (his approach obviously worked wonders) and the person who told him that this was a good idea was his coach back when he was in college….20 years ago.

Kevin is Going Anabolic: Part I

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On August - 28 - 2007

By: Kevin Larrabee

Well, after a summer of getting as strong as legally possible, I am looking to lean out a little bit, and at the same time hold on to every last bit of muscle and strength that I have gained over the last four months. I decided to give the Anabolic Diet a shot after re-reading Jen Heath’s Article from MWA, and talking to her at length about it. I am modifying it a little bit, but mostly sticking to the guidelines that have been outlined in the article.

Now, lets talk about what I am doing for the Anabolic Diet.

Low Carb Muscle Building

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On August - 17 - 2007

By: Jimmy Smith

A lot has been written about low carbohydrate diets and the ability to build muscle. More or less, we’re looking for the magical effect known as “adding muscle while losing fat”. You have those who argue that we need carbohydrate due to there effect on enhancing glycogen storage thus causing anabolic processes to occur once. On the other hand, there’s individuals who ignore quick post workout carbs due to the large insulin spike.

Anabolic Diet Benefits

In my training of individuals, I advocate many different nutritional schemes. Each person is unique and has a different starting point and destination in mind. I choose what nutrition is best for each person based on many factors.

A lot of people ask me what the fastest way to build muscle while staying as lean as possible is, and my mind always leans toward the Anabolic Diet.

The Business Side of Training

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On August - 14 - 2007

Like it or not, if you’re a personal trainer, you’re a business (wo)man. Day in and day out you’re selling yourself and your services to the general public (or if you’re a lucky SOB, Kate Beckinsale). If there is one thing I wish I could do, it would be to go back three years and really make an effort to learn the business side of training in more detail. Luckily I have had the guidance of some very knowledgeable people (Eric Cressey, Alwyn Cosgrove, Mike Robertson, to name a few) who have helped me realize and understand the importance of the business side of things in the fitness industry. Granted I have a TON more to learn, but in the meantime here are some tidbits that I have learned along the way.

Why Are You Doing This?

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On August - 13 - 2007

I would say that a good 80% of you will answer, “To look better naked.” That is a great answer, hell I would even give that answer. Looking better naked is a great incentive to train and eat clean. I think we all need to ask ourselves this question every few months. Think to yourself, “Why am I doing all of this?”

If you do not have an objective with your training, and a destination that is determined before you set out, you will be destined to be derailed. This may come in the form of program hopping, trying to decide if you want to be bulking or cutting, and so on.
