4 Days until the biggest day of the year for me. Right now I am scheduled to work from 9pm-3am on the night of September 24. Why? Because Halo 3 comes out (I have a second job for 15 hours a week to pay the bills at Gamestop). Soon to break the biggest sales amount for the first day, for a piece of entertainment.

As I have talked about in the past, I love me some XBOX 360, and Halo 3 will be the biggest game released for it. It is so big that I have gotten someone to cover my shifts at work, I have done all of my homework in advance, and I am taking 3 days off from the gym. This will be the first time I have taken 3 days off consecutively in a long time. And to be honest, my body has begun to tell me that it needs this. My lifts have stalled a bit, and my energy has been shit more or less.

My recovery plans: Wake up, play some Halo 3, go to class, play Halo 3, go for a walk, play Halo 3. Yes, I am a nerd, I can admit that. This is when it will come out.

You Can’t Run To Get Fit. You Need To Get Fit To Run

Above is a quote that I “stole” from Mike Boyle whom I am sure “stole” it from someone else (I think it was Diane Lee actually).

The fact of the matter is, most (read: not all) people shouldn’t be running (especially women). What’s the first thing that women do to get into shape? They hightail it to the local store and buy a new pair of pearly white running shoes and go for a jog outside. What’s the first piece of equipment that women will gravitate towards if they have never set foot in a gym before? The treadmill. And more often than not, both scenarios DO NOT look pretty.

  • Hey Kevin,The show is great I have been trying to make up ground on the earlier shows. I was wondering if you all can talk about endurance training. For example, I am a runner, usually running 8-12 miles (on easy days) and add two speed workout days(intervals, lactic acid threshold runs etc.) and a long run, (18-20 miles). But I am a strange runner, I also lift. Many runners cringe when they see dumbbells, but I lift every other day and I am using NROL. So my question is, what should my diet look like????? An would you recommend any supplements. (Right now I am just taking Whey.
  • I am in college and trying to pursue a degree in Exercise Science, I was wondering how did you deal with the really hard classes, like pre calulus etc…????

  • Currently what does your training regimen look like?
  • You mentioned that you’ve been doing more or less the same exercises for the last year, and I know you’ve written about this in the past; tell our listeners about your philosophy on why trainees shouldn’t frequently change their exercise selection.
  • Tell us about your new book, “The Cheat to Lose Diet,” what is the philosophy?
  • Can you talk about the science behind why this program works?

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On September - 4 - 2007

After Alwyn Cosgrove’s Lift Strong CD came out, I have been wanting to find a way to give back in some way. I have been so fortunate these last few years to be where I am today.

  • Hi Kevin,

I really enjoy the podcast, only been listening for a couple of months and have found a lot of it really useful as I try and get into shape.

I have a question for you and the team. As I find the free gym frustratingly crowded in the evenings (especially the free weights, the machines are a ghost town!) I’m thinking of switching to early morning workouts. Is there anything I should be aware of with regards to nutrition, warming-up or anything else with regards to hitting the weights before work?

Thanks and keep up the great work

    Ash (a UK listener)

  • How much do you guys implement Med Ball training into your workouts and workouts for your clients?
  • Do you guys condone “energy drinks” I tend to drink one or two a day, usually pre-workout
  • Are there any real benifits of performing an Over Head squat? Is it worth the time to get the technique right, vs the reward?

HIIT: Outside the Gym

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On September - 1 - 2007

By: Jen Heath

In one of the last episodes, we talked about performing HIIT outside the gym. It is mostly talked about in reference to alternating periods of sprints (heart rate is elevated) and active recovery (heart rate is coming down) on machines such as the elliptical trainer, treadmill or bike. Though this is the most common form of HIIT, it is certainly not the only one! HIIT can be performed anywhere, anytime. All you need to know are exercises that you can incorporate into that “sprint/recovery” format. Below you will find a list of some of the most popular movements. Simply perform each one for 45 seconds (this is your sprint), then walk around or stretch for 45 seconds (this is your active recovery). As you can see, depending on how many of the movements you complete, this workout can be as short as 5-10 minutes or as long as 30minutes.
