  • What’s up guys,

What are your thoughts on Glutamine both for performance and for gut health. I read that Dr. Berardi used it for his gut health protocol and I was wondering what you thought about this as well as its role in performance. I’m fighting digestive problems and am trying to decide between buying Glutamine or BCAA’s (I need to gain mass) so I just wanted to know if Glutamine could substitute the BCAA’s for performance and also help with digestion. Also, what if any protein powders have you`guys found to be the friendliest on the stomach.

    Thanks,

    -Eddy Rohrmeier, NY (pronounced Roar-Myer)

  • What do you guys think about Crossfit and Gym Jones training -Marcus
  • I hear you guys talk about the seminars you go to, how do you find out about upcoming seminars and which ones are the best to attend? -Shawn D.
  • On last week’s show Kevin talked about how he eats pork rinds, is it OK to eat these while on a low-carb diet? – Cindy

The Cheap Ass Sled: Part I

Posted by Kevin Larrabee On February - 13 - 2008

By: Kevin Larrabee

This past summer I trained with Eric Cressey and I became an admitted addict of two things, strength, and sleds. I loved me some sled dragging, I was the only person in my group that looked forward to them every Tuesday night after glute-ham raises. I don’t know what it was about the sled that I loved so much, probably because it was the only thing we did that I excelled in over everyone else in out group. It felt good to pull five plates when everyone else was about to puke, actually someone did, shout out to you Dan. I threw up a video of me dragging 5 plates on the sled during the summer, displaying my love for the exercise.

Also dragging the sled was a pivital part of the, “Death Circuit.”

Now here is the problem I was faced with, I don’t have a sled here at school to train with or to use with my clients. Also I don’t have $175 lying around to order one from EliteFTS. So, what do I do?

I thought to myself, that all I really need is rope, the plates, and something to put under them so they do not mark up the floor or destroy the rubber covering of the weights. I went to my local hardwa…Walmart, and picked up some 244 pound test rope for $5. I went into the storage closet of the weight room and found an old mat, and grabbed my $2 straps from my bag. Then after 15 minutes playing with different configurations I came up with this:

One of my clients Chris testing the Cheap Ass Sled on our rubber court.

Sled in Action

Chris Dragging Sled

Now how did this all work out? Come back next week for part two of how it is setup, with video.

  • I have a question for you, I heard on a recent Fitcast episode say that you played Division 3 basketball. My brother does too. I really want him to do well his senior season. Is there any training program that you would suggest. His minutes have decreased this season, I feel that strenght and making his first step quicker will really help his game.

    Thanks

  • Hello Kevin and Jimmy! My name is Marcus and i’m a personal trainer from Sweden.

I love the show and listen to it all the time when i walk my dog, it´s great. I really like the new music and the new logo.
Everytime you plug a new product or book I must have it. Haha so my bookcase is quite full now and my wallet emty, but´s its great anyway.

So I have a couple of questions for the mailbag.

    1. Chad Waterbury have this set rep volume for strenght, hypertrophy and fatloss and I just wondering if that´s something Jimmy or you Kevin use when you design trainingprograms?

    2. Speaking of program design, do you follow a certain persons program design like, Alwyn, Mike Boyl, Chad, Coach Dos or someone else?

  • Hi Kevin,Just writing to let you know the new editing is really adding to the show, keep up the great work.

I was wondering if you could clarify a point in the discussion with Alwyn Cosgrove regarding HIIT intervals using a heart rate monitor.
Alwyn mentioned the easy heart rate of 138 for fat loss, and 120 for athletes in training.
I’m wondering what the upper heart rate should be if your goal is fat loss, e.g. 80% of Max Heart Rate or 90%? Also could you explain Mike Boyle’s 30sec – 1min example in more detail as well.
How many times per week would you recommend doing this.

    Cheers,
    Frances from sunny Australia.

Mailbag

  • Hi guys!I’m a fitcast listener…I love the show, and you guys do an awesome job. I had a training question for you both, to get your feedback.

I’ve read about the benefits of doing supersets, but a lot of times in my gym, the weights, machines, and/or benches are either taken, or not conveniently located next to each other to do a superset. The program I’m following from an online trainer has me doing ALL supersets for my workouts, to help with my goal of fat loss. I’m not afraid to lift heavy, thanks to all your advice on your show, but my question is, is it ALWAYS recommended to do supersets whenever possible for fat loss, or are there times when lifting weights can be done without supersetting them, and still get the same results?

Thanks again, and I can’t wait to listen to this week’s show!

    Carrie (29, Washington DC)

  • Hi, my name is Matt Tuck, and I just wanted to say
that I love your show. I just found it about a week
ago. I am going to use it as insentive to do my low
intensity cardio sessions. The only time I am going to
let myself listen to the show is while I am on the
treadmill. I am a Exercise Science major in TN. I am
wanting to one day be one the top trainers in the
industry, and just wanted to let you know that your
show is awesome and a great help to me.
  • Kevin,Here are some mailbag questions for you and Jimmy.

    (1) Is a deadlift knee or hip dominant? Also what about a natural GHR?
Some resources state knee because the knee bends to perform the exercise, some state hip because of the muscles used.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Round Table

  • Tony, what have you been up too at CP, what has changed for you in terms of the way you train people, are you enjoying it. (I think we can branch of of this as well)
  • I see that Jen has her fat loss pros, Jimmy is bringing a product to market soon, I was wondering if you (Tony) had any plans to release a product of your own in the near future. (Gregg)
