Q&A with Chad

  •

I would consider myself skinny fat and recently completed the 10/10 transformation. While I ended up losing 8 lbs of fat, I didn’t seem to put on any LBM. In fact, I’ve always had a much easier time losing fat than gaining muscle. Typically when I try to gain muscle I end up putting on fat too quickly. The end result is that I basically am never able to make appreciable muscle gains. What suggestions would you have for someone in a similar situation as myself.

Thanks for any tips you can give me

    Pete

  • Hey Chad,

I’ve been training since last summer using the various programs from your latest book. I noticed with the exception of a few programs such as Lift Fast Get Big most of them include no tempo instructions. As a default I generally use 2/0/1 but I was wondering why you felt tempo was less of an issue in these programs? I’ve also been using your 1RM scheme to determine my loads which you’ve since dismissed but I still find useful. Is there a better alteranitve?

Thanks for the great programs which I always find interesting and challenging….the results aren’t too shabby either!

  • Hi Chad My name is Matt Tuck, I am a big fan of yours, and am glad that you are on the show. My question is over fat loss. I have been trying to lose bodyfat for a while now and seem to have stopped at 12% weighing 200. I am on a low carb diet(under 70 a day) and my calories are usually around 1800-2000. I train 5hrs a week using complexes, HIIT, and swimming. Are there any recommendations for getting over that hump? Thanks. Also are you going to be doing any seminars anywhere near TN? -Matt

  • As for my question, I was wondering what you two thought about letting the knee travel forward over the toe in a lunge/split squat etc. It seems that the whole “don’t let the knee go beyond the toe” has been a myth perpetuated by the sports and fitness community and needs to be debunked. There is no solid research out there that shows that it is harmful, in fact, it is more beneficial for your knee to travel through its complete range of motion. Just wanted to get your take on it. Keep it up guys. Good work.

  • Kevin, Jen and Jimmy i just started listening to your show a month ago. I listened to a bunch of old episodes and i didn’t hear you talk about mountain biking. I’m 38 and trying to get faster at cycling – what is the best way for me to get a big motor?

I workout 5-6 times a week already, and do cardio at lunch when i can since my Job is really cool about that.

    511, 200lbs

    thank you, Jeff Check
  • Kevin and Jimmy,

Is it worrisome if I frequently hear cracking it my knee even though I am young, have no knee pain at all, good glute strenght and activation and good flexibilty (can full olympic squat, knees never cave in)?

PS I miss getting the weekly email letting me know the upcoming guests and fitcast news.
  • hey Kevin, i really enjoy the show, i started listening around episode thirty and have not missed one sense. i love to run and i am going to compete in a 5k this summer. i usually do one sprint session, one tempo session, and one long run session a week. i also train with weights four days a week. how much specific leg work should i do on top of my running? right now i do squats ( 4 sets of 6 reps) one day and jump squats (3 sets of 10 reps) on another day. i don’t want to over train my legs but i want to maximize muscle growth for speed and endurance. any information you and jimmy can give me would be greatly appreciated. i learn something new every week from you guys and your guest, keep up the the great work!………josh

  •

Loved the show this past week. I really liked the discussion of concepts in training (rants). Keep up the good work, the show gets better and better each week.

I have one question, what corrective exercises or “fillers” is Tony referring to? What do you do as fillers and how do you utilize them during a workout?

I do a 3:1 split split by 3 nights of kickboxing - so not really a 3:1 but… When I lift I do pretty much everything explosive, love Olympic complexes and do everything with a limited rest between each exercise, 60 seconds or less.

I’d like to give the “fillers” a try, whatever they are.

And for music – Dropkick Murphy’s!

    thanks,

    jason

  • Hi!

I’m a big fan of the fitcast!!

I started listening very early! I think it was around show number 10…

Since then I’m hooked! I heard every single one!

I’m a student just like you, besides the fact that I’m over here in Germany and studying something slightly different.

    When I’m done I will be a PE-Teacher…

That and the fact that I got a gym membership since I’m 17 (now almost 27) is why I like fitcast so much. It is really entertaining and I even learn something.

I enjoy you guys taking about new studies a lot.

That’s why I would like to hear yours and Jimmy’s opinion on the following:

“Study: No Benefits To Drinking More Water?”

    http://www.nbc10.com/health/15782454/detail.html?rss=phi&psp=health

You are so lucky to live in the USA fitness wise…

In Germany is it at least comparable to wherever the guy came from you talked about during one of the last few show.

I think we are (at least the most of us) far behind.

I never meet anyone in person who knew M. Boyl, John Berardi etc.

I try to get foam roller but can’t find any! (Sooner or later I got to order them from the US.)

While I’m doing something like Afterburn I will most likely get at least some wired looks.

They just don’t know what I’m doing because “everyone” is still doing those 3×12 Stuff.

Any way I go to bed now I got a test tomorrow…

    Greetings from good old Germany!

    Steve

  • I would like to incorporate speed training into my program.

    Some specifics,

I want to improve my sprint time and fighting speed (kicks and punches).

    1) What type of exercises do you recommend ?

    2) Any books that you suggest I read?

    Amicably,

    Jaime Lopez
  • Hey Kevin,

I’m a regular listener of The Fit Cast and really enjoy the program.  I’ve
gotten a lot out of it, and think you guys are doing a great job of
spreading the right kind of gospel.

I’m writing to suggest a possible future topic that might be of interest.
Specifically, legal issues that pertain to personal trainers.  I thought of
this as I recently helped a fried who is a personal trainer put together a
client contract.  While this is a different subject matter than you normally
cover on the show, it could be interesting.  I have a feeling that a lot of
people sort of jump into the business without appreciating some of the risks
they face, and some ways they can mitigate those risks – for example, with a
    properly written contract.

I’m not trying to sell anything.  And while I’m a lawyer, my specialty is in
securities law (that’s my full time job), but I have learned a lot about
about exercise and sports law while I was putting together the contract for
    my friend.

Some possible topics to discuss could include:

    1. Overview of professional liability.

    2. Why you should have a written contract with your clients.

    3. Incorporating your business (or forming an LLC).

I think we could come up with some more, as well as soliciting input from
your audience as well.  If you think you’re interesting in something like
    this, give me a shout.

    Keep up the great work!

    Andrew
