Another Yankee Injury
Something has got to be done; this is getting out of hand. Now Philip Hughes, the “chosen one” for the New York Yankees has gone and gotten hurt. It’s bad enough that the Yankees were having a rash of injuries and have the 3rd worst record in baseball but now the immediate pitching hope for today and the future is out with a hamstring strain. Another hamstring strain, sick of hearing that yet? Go take a look online; it really isn’t that nasty but to a Yankee fan it can’t get worse.
I know the Yankee strength and conditioning coach is getting a ton of heat but this injury could have been avoided. His back leg swung out in an awkward fashion then he injured the hamstring on his stance leg. The term is hip extension with knee extension syndrome and it is a result of hamstring dominance. Why? His glutes aren’t firing and his hamstrings have to overcompensate and eventually result in this type of injury. Think this activation work can’t help you? Something as simple as an awkward leg kick and there goes the stance hamstring.
It’s a shame that the one shining light in the Yankee rotation goes down to an injury that is so easily avoidable.
-Get the glutes to fire through activation exercises in both closed and open chains. Think bridges, single leg bridges, bridges with opposite lat pulling, clams, single leg raises.
-Progress to single leg training. Look to movements like single leg sit-to-stands,split squats, peterson step-ups,bowler squats
-Lengthen the psoas, adductors and hip lateral rotators. Use both dynamic and static movements here, both work and have there place.
1-2-3, that’s it.
-Jimmy
